Don't Let Us Get Sick - Warren Zevon

Although he has an incredible following, and has worked with an incredible amount of other artists, I feel nowadays Warren is almost unknown. This is a slow beautiful song, off his Life'll Kill you, carrying a heavy death theme. sadly, he died of cancer 3 yeas later, but his work will always be remembered.

Rock Me Gently - Andy Kim

I heard this song today for the first time in awhile, and it totally took some stress off me. I wanted to get up and dance to this bad boy in the lab I was in. Luckily I embarrass easily so I did not. The bass to lead into this song is epic, one of the best build ups to one of the most singable choruses that exists. Considered prob the top bubblegum hit of all time, it's still awesome enough to be listened by a wide array of music fans. Another Canadian, he actually had not had a hit for three years and had to form his own label just to release this song. Now that is a tale of incredible drive. I salute you Andy Kim.

Sir Duke - Stevie Wonder

This post is via Andrea

I dare you to find a happier song. This song just brightens my day. From his 1976 album Songs in the Key of Life, this song was written as a tribute to jazz legend Duke Ellington who died in 1974.  I especially love the horns. A great song about how great music is! You can feel it all over!

San Tropez - Pink Floyd

This song barely sounds like Pink Floyd, and you'd probably never guess it was them if you heard it on the radio. It's off Meddle too, which holds such Pink Floyd staples such as One of These Days and Echoes. This song just makes me think of summer for some reason, it's a driving song. It has an almost lounge piano solo that is just so fitting for the song. This is a song solely written by Roger Waters, who plays acoustic guitar on it, and was brought into the studio already done. It's also song by Waters, who I am a huge fan of, and is just a great, easy listening song.

In the Year 2525 - Zager and Evans

Zager and Evans display a very frighting look into the future with their song In the Year 2525, but what a cool little song. With a simple little riff, this song is made by the horns and other sounds in the background. Also, I have no idea where they are supposed to be in this video, it's quite the weird little set. Also they are playing in suits; not the kind of song you'd expect to rock but it certainly does. Their voices harmonize well together and I love to just put this on and imagine the world progressing through these periods off until the end. It's also amazing that they predicted something like test tube babies, which was only being whispered about back in 1969. At the end, this song begins to repeat itself, almost as if humans will continue to go in this cycle of self destruction only to begin again.

Cecilia - Simon and Garfunkel

A great little hit written by Paul Simon and done by Simon and Garfunkel. Although the song appears to be a women cheating on him but them making up, it has also been thought that this song might be about St. Cecilia, patron saint of music, and is in fact about the difficulty of songwriting. I'm not sure which one is true, although I personally like the second one because it's more abstract. A nice feeling song with great vocal lines and a simple but well placed solo really pull this song together and make it a hit.

The Logical Song - Supertramp

Off their major hit album Breakfast in America, The Logical Song was a hit in its own right. It has a very interesting musical flow with a lot of odd percussion background noises, and a hot sax solo in the middle that is electrifying. What makes this song is not only the lyrics, but the one he sings them. Putting a bit of an accent on it while also singing in odd timing and a little outside of the measure gives this song a recognizable hook. Placed near the start of a phenomenal side of music, this whole album is surely worth the listen.

Everlong - Foo Fighters

To be the drummer in one of the most famous bands in the world only to switch to guitar and vocals to form another powerhouse feat. Well that's what Dave Grohl accomplished. After drumming for Nirvana, he switched instruments to start up the Foo Fighters (although has still played drums for the likes of Tenacious D and Queens of the Stone Age). It's hard to pick a favorite song from the Foo Fighters, but this one always tops my list for two reasons : first it has a crazy music video that is really awesome, and secondly it has an incredible acoustic version he did live that will give you chills. Also, although Taylor Hawkins is in the video, he had not yet joined the band yet so Dave actually did the drumming for this song, and it is awesome. I have included the acoustic version at the end and it is a must check out for sure.

Born to Run - Bruce Springsteen

I know everyone knows this song, and it's an awesome one. What I love about this song is listening to it on the bus when travelling between cities which I'm doing today, so I figured if I'm going to enjoy it then everyone else should too, so enjoy. This was Bruce's first commercial hit, and his last ditch effort to make it big

Takin' A Ride - Don Felder

I first came across this song while watching the movie Heavy Metal ( great movie, great music, check it out) and thought it was so rocking. I was unfamiliar with Don Felder at the time and assumed maybe this was his only hit. Little did I know that he actually wrote Hotel California. Yes, Don Felder was the lead guitarist of the Eagles and wrote many of their pivotal hits along with Don Henley. His original band also featured Stephen Stills of CSNY fame, so this is no small time musician. Although his end with the Eagles was very messy and involved a law suit, one cannot ignore the hits we have received thanks to Don Felder.

Could Have Been A Lady - Hot Chocolate

A great little track from 1971 by Hot Chocolate, it has such a smooth feel, a cool drum riff, and some great guitar licks. This song has also been covered by April Wine, who's version I ultimately prefer, and I have included the link below. They very similar, however April does change up the lyrics a bit, and also has a much better breakdown for the bridge. Either way, Hot Chocolate was a very solid band, releasing at least one hit a year from 1970 through 1984, including this one in 71 and You Sexy Thing, which is the only UK single to reach the top 10 in three decades ( 70s, 80s, and 90s). They actually got their first break by doing a reggae version of John Lennons Give Peace a Chance, as he rather liked their version of it. A great underrated band who has several great hits worth checking out.

Golden Path - The Chemical Brothers

I know this doesn't seem like my type of band, and I definitely heard this song from my brother but I have always really liked it. It's got a great blend of digital music with the drums, and the talking style of lyrical delivery is so fitting for the song. It really tells a story and I absolutely love the lyrics; he gets powerful where he needs to and really paints a picture. Featuring the Flaming Lips, the video for this song is pretty crazy but very well done. Not a genre I listen to usually but this one is too good too ignore.

The End - The Beatles

And in the end, the love you take, is equal to the love you make.

Aqualung - Jethro Tull

A good song with a weird premise - it's about a homeless man named Aqualung who is a pedophile. This song has such a cool middle section, going down to an almost acoustic section, then kicking it up with some off the beat guitar strums. the first six notes are considered some of the most recognizable in rock history, and the guitar solo is absolutely phenomenal - apparently while recording it, Jimmy page walked in as Zeppelin was recording next door and waved to Martin Barre, perhaps inspiring him to give it his all. How can you not love a song that features jazz flute??

Beds Are Burning - Midnight Oil

I remember vividly the time I "almost" bought this album ( although I do own it now). We were in a sort of antique store, and me and my dad spotted it. Offering to buy it for me, he asked the owner how much it was. When he responded with 7 dollars, my dad laughed at him and told him this album wasn't worth that much. Frankly, he was right. Other this this track, this Australians 1987 release is fairly dull, but this song is a definite hit. About politic unrest at the time in Australia, its a very deep song with some great lyrics. Driven by a simple but awesome bass line, and coupled with some great timing and sound effects, this song is worth checking out.
